West Linn

In the early 1840s, Robert Moore purchased 1,000 acres from the “Wallamut” Indians and decided to build a town called “Robin’s Nest.” In 1845, Moore renamed his tiny town “Linn City” in honor of Dr. Lewis F. Linn - a U.S. Senator from Missouri, free-state advocate and Roger’s friend. When Moore died in 1857, his dream of a completed town was still unfulfilled and the rest of the year brought a drastic fire and floods that ruined attempts at rebuilding. 1868 brought prosperity as the Willamette Transportation Locks Co. began operation. The company still provides shipping passage over the Willamette Falls.

West Linn was incorporated in 1913 and included the areas of West Oregon City, Willamette Heights, Sunset and Bolton. West Linn’s population has grown from 225 residents in 1860 to the 24,000 current residents that currently inhabit its 7.5 square mile area. West Linn’s name is derived from the former names Linn City and West Oregon City.

Over the past 50 years, July has been Old Fashioned Fair time in West Linn. This community-driven, three-day event includes skydivers, a parade, an open-air market and more. The open-air market involves area craftsmen, local businesses and public agencies in a beautiful park setting sharing their wares and information to 13,000 plus fair visitors. The event also hosts an official Chili Cook-off.

The West Linn-Wilsonville School District has a reputation for excellence, which is probably part of the reason for its Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores ranking among the highest in the state with 90% of all West Linn-Wilsonville graduates going on to college. There is a multitude of higher education options in close proximity to West Linn including: Portland State University, Reed College, Lewis and Clark College, University of Portland, George Fox University, Concordia University, Linfield College, Pacific University, Marylhurst University, University of Phoenix, Clackamas Community College (Oregon City and Wilsonville), Portland Community College (several campuses), Mt. Hood Community College (Gresham), Washington State University-Vancouver and Clark Community College (Vancouver, Wash.).

Mt. Hood offers its year-round skiing and provides a breathtaking backdrop to a number of areas in West Linn. Nearby is the scenic Columbia Gorge, which boasts the highest concentration of waterfalls in North America, and Multnomah Falls - one of the highest waterfalls in the world. The Oregon Coast is to the west offering many state parks overlooking beautiful beaches.

The West Linn Parks and Recreation Department provides safe, scenic, and well-maintained parks and facilities with many creative recreation programs for all ages. One of the newer West Linn Parks, Tanner Creek Park, has a new skate park in the beginning phase of construction.

West Linn is only 20 minutes from the Portland International Airport at the south end of Portland. Portland can be accessed via Willamette (pronounced “will-AM-it") Drive - also known as Highway 43 - and Interstate 205. Portland provides limitless recreation activities, a variety of fine dining, and an abounding culture.

West Linn has all of the options! With its rivers, mountains, and proximity to Portland, the choices of activities are limitless and the setting is perfect.
